ELM sets framework for Sawgrass Village redevelopment

ELM | Ervin Lovett Miller is the planner, architect, and landscape architect for the urban redevelopment of Sawgrass Village, completing the long-awaited transformation of the tired 1980s vintage shopping center into the retail, restaurant, and civic centerpiece of Ponte Vedra Beach.

ELM’s Jacksonville office has set a transformative vision for Sawgrass Village as the “Heart of Ponte Vedra Beach,” leading the project’s planning and design, including robust community involvement. The first step began in 2010 with the design and construction of Phase I, which included a state-of-the-art Publix and CVS, together with initial boutique retail and restaurant shops.

ELM will seek to build on the success of Phase I in the project’s second phase, which will include new and innovative dining experiences, improved retail, and a “shopping street” with boutiques and shops. Currently, ELM is in the process of obtaining community approvals and will complete design and construction documents once the approval process is finished.

“We looked at Sawgrass Village from a master planning perspective, creating major meaningful improvements in the first phase with better circulation and a more desirable pedestrian-friendly streetscape environment,” said Russ Ervin LEED AP BD+C, ELM founding partner and the project’s lead designer. “Shopping has evolved into a form of entertainment, and the old facility wasn’t a place that attracted people – where they wanted to spend their time. The quality of Sawgrass Village has improved significantly just by what’s been done in Phase I, and the framework is now in place to create a world-class retail and restaurant destination in Phase II.”

Sawgrass Village is a unique location as the “front door” of the headquarters of the PGA Tour and one of golf’s most significant championships, The Players. The TOUR and The Players attract people from around the world; and as a result, Ponte Vedra Beach has become a community with national and international recognition. When complete, ELM’s plan will transform Sawgrass Village into an energetic, pedestrian-rich commercial environment, just as Ponte Vedra Beach has transformed into one of the Southeastern United States’ most desirable oceanfront communities.
