Sawgrass Beach Club completes award-winning, multi-million dollar renovation
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A recent multi-million dollar renovation of Sawgrass Country Club’s Beach Club was completed in time for members to enjoy the summer months with enhanced and expanded dining, entertainment, and pool amenities.
Led by ELM | Ervin Lovett Miller, the architecture and planning team drew on its extensive expertise in private club, hospitality, and recreational amenities to complete an inspired redesign and replacement of the family pool, renovations of all interior dining and bar areas, expansion of the outdoor SandBar Bistro, upgrades to the outdoor decks, improved pedestrian beach access, and landscape enhancements to take better advantage of the Club’s unique beachfront setting.
The project was recently awarded the Excellence in Construction Eagle Award, the highest award given by the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) First Coast Chapter. It was also nominated as one of only three projects considered for Project of the Year by ABC.
Beach Club improvements represent the second phase in a multi-phase strategic master plan for the Sawgrass Country Club. ELM completed a successful new state-of-the-art Fitness Center for the Club in 2013 and has been Sawgrass Country Club’s consulting design firm for more than five years.
Interior dining, bar, and kitchen upgrades have transformed the 24,000-square-foot Beach Club at Sawgrass Country Club, including major reconfigurations of dining spaces, lighting upgrades, and new fixtures and finishes.
The result has been a comprehensive improvement to the Beach Club’s interior dining and gathering spaces, upgrades to HVAC systems, an expanded kitchen, and extensive exterior improvements - including a dynamic new family pool and improved and expanded outdoor dining facility.
The new Family Pool replaces an antiquated 40-year-old facility and represents a striking improvement with dynamic water features, social areas within the pool, shade structures and pavilions, heavy landscaping, and greater capacity for members and guests.
According to ELM's Partner in charge of the project Steve Lovett, “The old pool was identified by club members as a weakness. It was an old facility, lacked shade, and was an unenjoyable, harsh environment. We didn’t change the size or general location of the pool, but the redesign yielded a remarkable lush, dynamic environment under the canopy of palms, with interactive water features, shade structures, and extensive space for social interaction. It is a dramatic improvement.”
Oceanfront dining has been enhanced with upgrades and a major expansion to the SandBar Bistro’s outdoor pavilion, one of the club’s most popular casual dining venues. Additional improvements were made to outdoor dining spaces - upgrading finishes, furniture, and the orientation of circulation and seating to take full advantage of the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
“From day one, we were inspired by the overwhelming natural beauty of the Beach Club’s setting. We simply looked out the windows for inspiration, finding tremendous beauty in the natural elements that surround the club, ” said Nancy Short, principal with Ansana Interior Design, the project’s interior design firm.
Sawgrass Beach Club kicked off the project last fall and construction was recently successfully completed in time for the 2016 summer beach and pool season.
ELM | Ervin Lovett Miller was the project lead, providing master planning, architectural, and landscape architectural design services. Ansana Interior Design of Winter Park, Florida, was the project’s interior designer. The project was constructed by Sauer, Inc., of Jacksonville, Florida.
