Jacksonville Zoo | Giraffe Savanna

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

At more than two full acres, the Giraffe Savanna more than doubled the existing giraffe habitat and provides a dynamic interactive experience for zoo visitors.

An elevated boardwalk winds its way through a botanic garden highlighting plant species of the savanna and allows visitors to get “eye-to-eye” with the giraffes and feed them.

The covered overlook provides a fantastic viewpoint across the entire two-acre savanna and also functions as a mini special event area. The habitat supports multiple species, including wattled cranes, saddle-billed storks, white-backed vulture, and leopard tortoise.

During the design phase of the project, Chris Overdorf engaged animal-science doctor Temple Grandin, who reviewed and approved the holding barn renovations and shift system for the herd.
