Jacksonville Country Day School

Jacksonville, Florida

We have partnered with Jacksonville Country Day School (JCDS), a private school serving students in grades Pre-K 3 through 6, to lead the renovation of the central campus building. JCDS serves a student, staff and faculty population of approximately 500, as well as families and visitors of the school community. The purpose of the renovation is to improve overall campus connectivity and efficiency for students, staff, and administrators, and to continue to build a 21st-century learning environment that encourages students’ collaboration, exploration and innovation. Updates to the campus will include 17,150 sq. ft. of renovation of the central building structure, and about 1,300 sq. ft. of new patio construction.

The first phase of the project will involve interior demolition and construction of a new dining room, interactive library area, and kitchen, interior demolition of the existing administration area, library, and computer/science lab, and construction of a new interior administration area and admissions office. The project’s second phase, to be completed at a later date, will include interior demolition of the former library and construction of new extended day spaces, additional storage, and campus accessibility improvements. The school’s dining room will be enhanced to create a welcoming and brighter atmosphere, and more efficiently support a lunchtime capacity of 480 students, faculty and staff. The dining room will ultimately become the campus social hub, and is designed for maximum flexibility to host school and community events throughout the year.

Inspired by a treehouse concept and designed to ignite students’ imaginations, the school’s library space will be relocated and designed to be a unique, multi-level space that takes advantage of variations in the building’s existing organic architecture. The light-filled and engaging center for learning, innovation and collaboration will be designed to accommodate different age groups, provide areas for both group gatherings and independent work, be ADA accessible and better reflect the 21st century model of the library as an interactive, engaging place for learning.

ELM, in partnership with HOTA Design Studio, an interior design firm based in downtown Jacksonville, has been engaged by the school to lead the renovation. The structural engineer for the project is Atlantic Engineering Services, Powell & Hinkle Engineering is the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and telecommunications engineering consultant, and Sauer is the general contractor.

Construction is underway, with an estimated completion by the start of the 2019-2020 school year in August. Updates can be found on the JCDS website at https://www.jcds.com/about-jcds/renovation-project.

The team from ELM saw the beauty in our 1960s building and helped us maintain many unique architectural features while designing our updated space for learners of this generation and beyond.
